Hi there and welcome to my first ever blog post!
I'm one mighty excited lady to find you here with me right now. Thank you!
I'm working like a woman with her pants (or skirt) on fire to get the Urban Charms shop and new website up and running and I'm hoping to have the new site launched in June this year. I'm super excited because not only will it include a new look and oh-so-easy to navigate jewellery shop, but you will also be able to book jewellery making parties and workshops for you and your little ones! Imagine your child making their very own polymer clay cupcake necklace or you creating a charm bracelet that represents who you are in the comfort of your own home with your girlfriends and a glass of wine. Exciting, huh?!
It was never my plan to own and run a jewellery making business. It all started some years ago when I used to make my own earrings. Other things caught my eye at the time (namely my husband) and I put the jewellery pliers down for a while to focus building my family - although I never stopped creating - canvas art for myself, friends and family, decoupage, dabbling in scrapbooking, and making baby gifts were all on the list.
Then last year, I had a light-bulb moment. I've always been a picky accessoriser and it takes me ages to find the right pieces to suit my individual sense of style. In fact, if a special occasion was looming it was not uncommon for me to have bought numerous pieces of jewellery just to test with my outfit. So, I decided to take the matter into my own hands and start making again, but this time with a twist. I made myself a couple of rings using dollhouse ceramics and polymer clay miniature food I'd made and then wore them to work. There was no intention of selling - just making fun pieces for myself and friends. However, my colleagues had other ideas! Not long after, Urban Charms was born and I'm quite sure one particular lady from work owns half the shop (if you're reading, you know who you are!). I was and still am totally humbled and honoured that people buy the things I make. It blows me away!
There are so many reasons I love doing what I do, but first and foremost I wouldn't be creating if it wasn't one of my passions. For as long as I can remember I was the person excited by colour, tactile experiences and creativity. I recall walking through the supermarket with my dear friend, who also happened to be my housemate at the time, and her pretty much slapping my hand away from the shelves as I picked up cans with interesting labels and squealed like a little girl when we reached the stationery aisle. I was, and still am, obsessed with a good looking notebook or pretty coloured pacer pencils. Some things just never get old for me.
I'm also a dedicated educator. I've been a primary school teacher for over ten years and love my work! It's time now for me to see if I can meld my passion for education and creativity together to help serve the kids in need within schools in my town. Apart from making unique jewellery for you and being in the throes of creating a fun program for jewellery making parties for children and adults, I am dedicated to creating an arts program for school children who are suffering from self-esteem, resilience or other emotional issues. I'm not an Art Therapist, but I do know that art can heal through self-discovery, assist with labeling emotions through self-expression and help children through tough times. I've seen it happen. I can't wait to share this journey with you.
Lastly, but certainly not least, I'm determined to be the woman who sets her own hours and is able to dedicate her free time to her son (see my little Max above - cute huh?). Max has just started Kindergarten and I can see time slipping away right before my eyes. I don't want to miss a minute. Not a second. I don't think I would have ever had the guts to walk on the entrepreneurial path if I didn't have a burning desire to enjoy his childhood with him as my driving force.
So there you go, accidental or not, I'm over the moon to be where I am today with so many exciting prospects just around the corner. I'm running at them full pelt.
