If you're an accessories junkie like me, you're sometimes bound to have trouble finding the right kind of bling to suit you. We all want jewellery that flatters and enhances our best features and detracts from our least favourites - but how do we find it?
You know, we've all done it - a friend shows up to a night out wearing an amazing set of chandelier earrings. They look so stunning on her that you just HAVE to have them. You skip on down to the store the next day to get yourself a pair but when you get them home they just don't look quite as brilliant on you as they did on your friend. Why, oh why?
Well, the answer is easy, if not a little mathematical. Obviously your outfit and wardrobe will make a difference here (look for my future post on matching your jewellery to your outfit), but did you know that your face shape counts in the equation when choosing jewellery to suit you? Following are some basic face shapes and what sort of jewellery you should be looking for to bring out your natural beauty! Ba-zing!
Oval-shaped faces have foreheads that are as wide as the cheekbones. The oval face narrows from the cheeks to the chin, creating the oval shape.
WHAT TO WEAR: You are one lucky lady because you can get away with almost any style of jewellery. It ALL looks good on you, but avoid earrings that are overly long because this will add more length to your oval face. Hoops are a great choice for you. This shape of face can also pull off earrings that are wider in design.
FAMOUS OVAL FACES: Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba and Megan Fox
Heart-shaped faces feature a forehead that is wider than the cheeks. The cheeks taper down to the chin.
WHAT TO WEAR: A heart shaped face looks amazing with a choker, or a double or triple strand necklace. By creating fullness at the neck you can balance the wider eye and cheekbone area with the delicate chin of a heart shaped face.
FAMOUS HEART SHAPED FACES: Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Kim Kardashian and Reese Witherspoon.
Also called circular faces, round faces are widest at the cheekbones. The cheekbones do not taper down to the chin as with other face shapes.
WHAT TO WEAR: Select jewellery that can help lengthen the appearance of your face. It is flattering to wear longer necklaces that balance out your look. The round face is ideal for wearing long, vertical style earrings like dangles, drops or narrow chandeliers.
FAMOUS ROUND FACES: Mila Kunis, Cameron Diaz and Adele.
The forehead, cheeks, and jaws are all about the same width on a square-shaped face. Women with square-shaped faces tend to have very strong jaw lines.
WHAT TO WEAR: Square faces look best when jewellery has curves to soften the face and give a more oval appearance. Longer styles usually work well because they create a vertical line to lengthen your face. Look for a necklace with a pendant or components with curves to balance the strong angular features of your jaw. A square face is ideal for wearing large oval hoops, long drop earrings and narrow chandelier earrings.
FAMOUS SQUARE FACES: Keira Knightley, Demi Moore and Kelly Osbourne.
Sometimes called a rectangular or narrow face, the oblong face has the same general shape as a square face but is elongated.
WHAT TO WEAR: An oblong face is enhances by a choker style necklace. A choker helps soften the 'vertical line' that can occur with a narrow face. Large beads at the base of the neck help shorten the look of the face. These face shapes can pull off wearing larger, bold style earrings, especially if they have loops, curves or swirls.
FAMOUS NARROW FACES: Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett and Hilary Swank
