I've been suffering from a little bit of analysis paralysis lately. Too many choices and not enough confidence to take a leap of faith on one. Working by myself, for myself and not a person at hand to bounce an idea off , unless you count the cat... oh, and social media of course... Social media rocks for getting advice from friends and associates.
Should I make a DIY Youtube video or stick with written instructions? Do I chose the coral or the raspberry? There's not much worse in my business books. Sitting stagnant rather than moving in any direction can be a confidence killer and brain power sucker.
So, what do I do about it when I feel like I've lost my business mojo and I can't make a decision to save myself? Well, dear friend, I take a step away from the computer and I turn up the volume!
I'm totally stuck in the 80's when it comes to my favourite tunes and I have to admit, a good dose of 'We Built This City' or 'Break My Stride' can get my decision making juices flowing. I tune into an 80's station on Jango (if you haven't heard of this online music gem then you need to check it out. Free online music selected for you based on what you like!) and then I might do a little dance around my kitchen while I sing into a carrot stick. I may or may not slide into my lounge room in my stockinged feet while nobody's in the house. I might also swing from the pantry doors like a little kid as I contemplate what's for lunch and just why did Devo choose to wear pot plant pots on their heads.
I tell you, there is absolutely nothing like a dance break in the middle of a frustrating decision making process - provided I am not in a meeting of course! Hmmm.. I'd like to see that one.
After a good 80's rock out, I sit myself down, step back into my business owner suede boots (and yes, they are often madly tapping under the desk after an energetic sing along) and I look at things with new clarity. Mostly, it's just the break I need to clear my head and get some perspective. I think to myself "so, what would Madonna or Cyndi do in this situation?" and you know what? I have a feeling they would both say "Lisa, stop your fluffing about and JUST DO IT! Choose one. You can always change it later. Start NOW!" Wise words... even if they are from the imaginary Madonna getting her Vogue on on my shoulder.
So, what about you? What do you do when you're stuck with a decision? Write a list of pros and cons? Talk to people for advice? I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.
Until next time, I'll be making like Billy Idol and 'dancing with myself' ...whoa, whoa, whoa..
What will you be doing?
